One of my favorite Christmas songs is the little drummer boy. Although there was no drummer boy recorded in the Bible I feel the story of the Little Drummer Boy summarizes what God expects of us all: to come to Him–warts and all–and be willing to be used by Him.
The first two lines of the song echos the the account in Luke 2 when the shepherds were told about Jesus’ birth and they came running to Bethlehem. On a side note, it’s very possible that one of those shepherds was actually a drummer boy. But, since they were rushing to get to Bethlehem he forgot his drum.
After a few pa rum pum’s, we get to “I have no gift to bring… That’s fit to give our king… Shall I play for you… Mary nodded” and eventually the baby Jesus “smiled at me… me and my drum” In Luke 21 Jesus comments that the widow who “gave two small copper coins… has put in more than all of [the rich people]”.
So, this Christmas let’s be like the little drummer boy and play our best for Jesus.
